Deadline looms for social service bursary applications

Metis and non-status Indians who want to study social work at the post-secondary level have until April 30, 2000 to apply for a bursary from Alberta Human Resources and Employment that will pay for a substantial portion of their education. From $8,000 to $13,000 a year is available per student per year, with a university student with a dependent getting the highest amount.

DRIFTPILE - People of all ages will get a chance to show off their talents, as the Driftpile First Nation Community School hosts a talent show and competition on April 19 at the school, beginning at 7 p.m.

This is the second talent show they've organized this school year. According to event organizer Trina Collins, the school decided to hold a second talent show because of the success of the first event, held in November.

EDMONTON - Music fans can enjoy an evening of entertainment while helping out at-risk youth, thanks to a fundraising event to be held at the Canadian Native Friendship Centre.

Dream Catcher Tour 2000 will be held at the Friendship Centre, located at 11205 - 101 St., on Friday, April 28. Tom Jackson will host the event, and will be joined on stage by fellow performers Lisa Brokop and Duane Steele.

Organizer DonnaWillier has been involved in co-ordinating talent shows and jamborees in the community since 1997.

Last year she organized the Willow Point talent show as part of the Treaty 8 celebrations in Sucker Creek.

Metis settlements elect new president

The Metis Settlements General Council, the governing body for Alberta's eight settlements and 6,000 people, have a new leader in the person of Randy Parenteau.

On July 26, Parenteau, a member and former chairperson of the Fishing Lake Settlement, was elected president for a three-year term.

He replaces Ken Noskey who held the position for nine years.

In his pre-election campaign, Parenteau promised, "If you want change, vote for me."

Lake pilgrimage changes with times

With increased Aboriginal direction and operation, the religious gathering of the Lac Ste. Anne pilgrimage has been reshaped to accommodate the ever increasing Native visitors.

With more than 40,000 people attending the pilgrimage annually, this year the event held from July 22 to 27 celebrated a new partnership between Aboriginal people and the Missionary Oblates of Grandin Province.

Last January an interim planning committee comprised of the First Nations, Metis Nation and the Oblates was formed to initiate the new arrangement.
