Hundreds of people attended the "Circling Winds: A Conference on Aboriginal Gang Issues" on Mar. 30 and 31. The conference, which was hosted by the WhiteStone Project, was sponsored by the Canadian Heritage Initiative. Delegates attended workshops located at the Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples, the basement at the Immaculate Conception Church and at the Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School at 96 St. and 108 Ave.

About 350 students gathered at the Canadian Native Friendship Centre in Edmonton on March 21, taking part in a student forum addressing the problem of racism.

The "Eliminating Racism Through Understanding" forum was held to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Among those attending were students and staff from Spruce Avenue Elementary-Junior High School; Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society; the Genesis Program; Ben Calf Robe Junior High School; and the Native Healing Centre.

For 26-year-old Shayne Courtorielle, riding and grooming and cleaning out a horse's stall will be a part of his day-to-day routine for the next four years. He will be a part of Canada's famous RCMP Musical Ride where members wear their red serge while riding horse back doing performances.

The musical ride tours all across Canada and across the United States. This year the ride will be touring Europe. Courterielle, who is Metis,was born and raised in Slave Lake. He's been a member with the RCMP for the last four-and-a-half years, currently posted in Hobbema.

Video drums away false ideas

Junior high school students across the province could soon be receiving a video lesson in eliminating racism, thanks to a new video production from Native Counselling Services of Alberta: "Mythomania-Drumming away false ideas." Francis Campbell is a producer with the agency's Bearpaw Media Productions, and co-producer of Mythomania. Working with Campbell on the video were three students from the University of Alberta.
