Most kids playing hockey just dream of watching a game in the Joe

Louis Arena in Detroit. But not only did Mandy Plain Eagle get to watch the Red Wings take on the Tampa Bay Lightning team at the renowned arena, she got to play a game there, too.

Mandy was one of 24 youth, who got to be part of the Willy O'Ree weekend Feb. 25 to 28.

O'Ree was a black hockey player who played for the Boston Bruins in the1950s.

New powwow dancers initiated into old traditions

In an initiation powwow ceremony held at the Ben Calf Robe School gymnasium on Mar. 25, more than 20 young people were initiated as powwow dancers. The event, set up by the O'Kesico Aboriginal Women's Society and the Cross Cultural Families of Native Children, was funded by the Waln Foundation of Edmonton.

More than 200 people attended the afternoon celebration, which showcased the dancers in their new powwow outfits moving to the beat of a powwow drum group.

On March 13, the community of Cadotte Lake, 550 km out of Edmonton, had a chance to celebrate their radio station CHWC's first birthday and to enjoy a bingo social with the CFWE bingo crew. The celebration at Cadotte Lake School included bingo, a dinner of Kentucky Fried Chicken, karaoke singers and a performance by Cadotte Lake's FMX and Rock City break dancers. More than 200 people attended the event.

Gang conference brings healthy attitude to inner city

Hundreds of people attended the "Circling Winds: A Conference on Aboriginal Gang Issues" on Mar. 30 and 31. The conference, which was hosted by the WhiteStone Project, was sponsored by the Canadian Heritage Initiative. Delegates attended workshops located at the Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples, the basement at the Immaculate Conception Church and at the Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School at 96 St. and 108 Ave.
