The Office of Native Students Services and the School of Native Studies at the University of Alberta are joining together to host the third annual Flying Moon Round Dance on Aug. 31.

The celebration will begin at 5 p.m. on the university quad. The event is free, and is open to the public.

The round dance takes its name from the Cree word for the month of August - Ohpahowipisim - which means "flying-up moon" or "flying moon", signifying the time of year "when young birds fly away on their own."

Yellowhead Tribal Council scored a coup July 17 when Rubin Hurricane Carter made an appearance at a YTC education conference, banquet and fund-raiser where he was the featured keynote speaker.

Carter, now the subject of a full length book, The 16th Round, and a movie entitled The Hurricane, with Denzel Washington playing the part of the former middleweight boxer, spent more than 20 years in jail for a triple murder he did not commit.

Burtonshaw's batting 3 out of 4

Even with a growing library of documents, Metis genealogist Geoff Burtonshaw says he can help only about three out of every four people who contact him.

The problem, he explains, is knowing where to begin to begin the search.

"You have to have a date to know where to look," he says. (Microfilmed demographic information in the Manitoba Script, for instance, fills a drawer in a file cabinet.)
