Two of Canada's leading theatre directors are reshaping modern arts and dance through an Aboriginal perspective.

Held during the Banff Arts Festival, "Bones: An Aboriginal Dance Opera" is a work shop production that was presented at the Margaret Greenham Theatre July 7 and 9. The production is a collaboration of Sadie Buck, director of Aboriginal Women's Voices, and choreographer Alejandro Ronceria, director of the Chinook Winds Aboriginal dance program.

Edmonton played host to the second annual International Bison Conference: "Bison Are Back 2000," from August 1 to 4 at the Mayfield Inn.

With more than 66 guest speakers from all over North America, a variety of topics were covered. Genetics, marketing, and the history of the buffalo in relation to the First Nations were addressed throughout the event.

Guest speakers included Tom Jackson in the opening ceremonies, and American billionaire Ted Turner during the event.

Calvin Vollrath will be packing up his fiddle and heading to Germany this fall, representing Canada at Worldwide Music Expo (WOMEX) 2000 in Berlin Oct. 19 to 22. The international music expo is the world's largest event dedicated to world, roots, folk, ethnic, traditional and local music.

Vollrath, a Metis fiddler from St. Paul, is one of five artists from across Canada chosen by the Canada Council for the Arts to represent the country at the international music showcase.

Metis boxer Rocky Whitford, 16, continues to add to his collection of silver medals. The latest was won at the Canadian Intermediate Championships held in St. Catherines, Ont., Jan. 20 to 23.

Fighting for Team Alberta, Whitford beat the Ontario champion before losing to Quebec's Sebastian Gauthier in the title fight in the 112-lb. class.

In the gold medal fight, the computer scoring showed the two fighters tied at four points each after the regulation four rounds. The count back of each of the five judges' individual scoring showed Gauthier as the winner.
