EDMONTON - An idea that formed three years ago is slowly getting off of the ground. The Guardian Angel program focuses on training women to be advocates and mediators for women who are experiencing personal, financial or family difficulties.

The Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women (IAAW) is currently seeking funds to help start up the program that will use traditional knowledge and cultural training to help women overcome their difficulties.

One recurring theme that emanated from the lips of several women panelists on the second day of the annual Esquao conference, banquet and awards was the need for women to be more proactive and face up to those issues that affect their human rights.

The May 20th Aboriginal Women's Human Rights Symposium was highlighted by several speakers who are long-standing activists in the arena of human rights.

Indian control of Indian education continues to be the ultimate goal in the provision of education for First Nations children in Canada.

Paula Collier is education policy analyst with the Assembly of First Nations (AFN). She explained the concept of Indian control of Indian education was one put forward in the 1984 document Tradition in Education, published by the National Indian Brotherhood, now the AFN.

The Native Communications program in Edmonton has graduated such students as Jimmy Herman, Dale Auger, Ed Burnstick Sr. and several others who have gone on to careers in broadcast journalism, newspaper reporting, or the entertainment industry. However this year's course at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton is the last. Earlier this year the college announced it was cutting its one-year programs.
