Native education policy review underway

Alberta Learning's review of its Native education policy is nearing completion, with the final report and recommendations expected in the fall.

According to Robert Rock, senior policy analyst with the provincial ministry's Native education project, the consultation portion of the review is winding down, and work will now begin on turning the results of that consultation into recommendations for the minister.

Rock said the policy review is happening for a number of reasons.

Bigstone Health and Wellness Cenre, the town of Slave Lake, Keeweetinok Lakes Regional Health Authority 15, the Municipal District of Opportunity, and the International Wellness Society held their first diabetes road relay race May 13 to raise money for diabetes prevention. The result was twice as good as organizers expected: the run brought in $13,396 by May 19, with outstanding pledges expected to raise the total to $15,000.

Among the scheduled activities June 21, the Athabasca Native Friendship Centre will be holding its annual general meeting and a barbecue at the Friendship Centre, starting at 6 p.m.

In Edmonton, the National Aboriginal Day Government of Canada Partnership Committee is organizing National Aboriginal Day events at Canada Place in the main atrium. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., arts and crafts will be on display, and a trade show will be held. Children's activities and a tea and bannock give-away will go from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A desire to see two cultures unite has brought back to life the long dormant Buffalo Runners Society.

When the Peigan Nation and town of Pincher Creek celebrate National Aboriginal Day June 21, celebrations will go way beyond the day.

"I think it's a good idea if we start preaching to our children unity," said Maurice Little Wolf, a constable with the Peigan RCMP detachment and an Elder. "We have a lot of connections we can build on. We realize we have to work together."

It has been a decade and a half since a woman has sat on the Kikino Metis Settlement Council. That changed in the May 8 election for two positions on the five-member council. Two women were among the eight candidates and both were elected.

Denise White, 37, led the polls with 97 votes and was elected to a three-year term. Verona White, 31, was second with 69 votes and will serve two years. It was the first foray into local politics for both women, who were sworn into office May 15. Denise White was named council vice-chair.
