Armed forces fighting Saskatchewan wildfires

The Canadian Armed forces have been called in to assist with fighting wildfires in northern Saskatchewan. Up to 14-hundred personnel are preparing to gear up to support the firefighting effort. CFB Cold Lake is prepared to provide additional housing for evacuated residents should the need arise.

North Tall Cree evacuated due to Wildfires

The northern Alberta community of North Tall Cree evacuated roughly 200 residents by 3 o’clock yesterday evening after the winds shifted northwest directing the fire towards highway 88.
The wildfire is burning approximately five kilometres west of North Tall Cree.

Audrey Meneen, director of emergency management for Tall Cree First Nation, says residents went to High Level, about 160 kilometres northwest of the reserve, and were staying at a hotel or with family. All residents are safe and accounted for.

One dead in quad rollover

One man is dead as a result of a quad rollover that occurred just before 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Beaverlodge RCMP and other emergency responders were called to a quad rollover on Range Road 90 south of Township Road 702. The male driver was pronounced deceased on scene. RCMP believe alcohol may have been a factor in the rollover.

Two killed near Fox Lake

RCMP were called at around one thirty this morning to a work camp located near Fox Creek.

When RCMP arrived on the scene they found two people dead.

The attacker was shot by police in the altercation that followed. The attacker has subsequently been arrested and is receiving treatment. RCMP personnel were not injured in the incident, and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has begun investigating the use of police firearms.

Fox Creek is located two and a half hours outside of Edmonton along Highway 43.

Siksika basketball players inspire pride in home community

Qualifying for the 1A basketball provincials for the first time in 40 years is a remarkable feat. But the Bassano Broncos, an all-First Nations high school basketball team, have accomplished more than that: they have inspired the community the team members come from and established a winning basketball culture within their school.

“Not only does it help the Nation by inspiring folks, but it speaks volumes to what our Siksika youth can do,” said Tyler White, CEO of Siksika Health Services.
