Wilderness Camp

Over a four day period between June 15 to 18 78 students from Grouard Northland School and Atikameg School attended a land-based learning experience at the Marten Lakes Wilderness Camp near Slave Lake.

The students who were in Grades 1 through 9 took part in the camp which was organized by the Kee Tas Kee Now Tribal Council and Northland School Division Partnership Agreement.

The camp was designed to show the students a variety of traditional and contemporary practices which included dry meat making, building a smoke rack, identifying plants for medicinal purposes, constructing shelters and fish scale art.

In addition to these activities, students acquired knowledge and self-confidence while learning how to fish, how to properly operate a canoe and how to properly use archery equipment
