National Chief visits school

Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde visited Alexander First Nation school on June 9. Bellegarde says First Nations are ready to talk to the federal government again about educational reform. Bellegarde also met with Premier Rachel Notley in Edmonton. Notley committed to implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Obstetrician/ gynecologist to Fort McMurray

Alberta Health services has recruited another obstetrician/ gynecologist to Fort McMurray

Dr. Nnamdi (a.k.a Christopher) Okoroafor received medical training in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. He completed his Royal Canadian College certification, and is currently practicing in Labrador City, Newfoundland. He is expected to begin practicing in Fort McMurray this summer.

Dr. Okoroafor is the second obstetrician/gynecologist to be recruited to Wood Buffalo this year.

Carey Price sweeps NHL awards
“Be proud of your heritage”

Carey Price encouraged First Nations youth to be leaders in their communities as he accepted the Vezina trophy at Wednesday night’s NHL Awards in Las Vegas.

Price closed his speech by saying “sunachailya (chin-al-lia).”
Which means, “thank you” in the Dakelh (Da-Kel-h) language, spoken by the Ulkatcho (Ul-gatch-o) people.

Teenager charged in Cold Lake

Police in Cold Lake have charged a teenager after he allegedly stabbed a man in the neck this weekend.

RCMP say the attack happened early Saturday morning in a rural area west of Cold Lake. A 21-year-old man was found with
stab wounds to his neck and wrist. He was airlifted to hospital in Edmonton and is expected to recover.

Not long afterwards, police got a call from a teenager who admitted "that he may have seriously harmed someone," according to RCMP

The Métis National Council said it was gravely disappointed that after six years of interventions to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), it was not invited to participate in any way in the final public national event. Without explanation or notification, the Métis Nation did not receive an invitation nor information on this closing event held in Ottawa in June.

The gaps in economic outcomes between Aboriginal people and non-Aboriginal Canadians remains large, said Chief Clarence Louie, chair of the National Aboriginal Economic Development Board. The NAEDB released its first Progress Report on the state of Aboriginal economic development June 17 in Osoyoos, B.C.

The Aboriginal Pavilion for the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games is the lone “official” Indigenous music and arts festival for the games, and organizers have announced a full line-up of musicians and multi-disciplinary artists who will “transform Fort York Historic Site’s Garrison Common grounds into one of the summer’s hottest free admission festival destinations,” reads a press release.
