It's the "biggest national gathering of white ideas around stewardship ever," is how one organizer describes a gathering of land trusts representatives who will meet at the University of Guelph in June to discuss protecting species at risk. Even so, an Elder from Six Nations in Ontario, a representative of the Haida Gwaii Marine Resources Group, a member of the Qikiqtaaluk Wildlife Board in Iqaluit and a couple more Native people are on the roster of presenters, and there is an effort now by the hosting university to draw in more.

St. Mary's high school and middle school were the sites of some fast-paced volleyball action April 14 to16.

Five men's teams, including one from Lethbridge, and six women's teams, including one each from Fernie, B.C., and Onion Lake-Saddle Lake on the Alberta-Saskatchewan border, competed for $2,000 in prize money.

"The weekend went really well," said co-organizer Hope Ann Wolf Child. "We got a good response from the crowd. They told us they wanted to have it again next year."

A memorial handgame tournament in honor of Philomene Faithful was held in Frog Lake April 22 and 23.

George Canapotatoe, from Onion Lake, Sask., took home the championship prize of $5,000, a jacket and a trophy. Second place went to Cameron Pipe from Kehewin, Alta., who picked up 3,500, a star blanket and a trophy. Third place winner Lorin Faithful from Frog Lake took home $2,000, a drum, a ribbon shirt and a trophy. Fourth place winner Mike Waskahat from Frog Lake won $1,500, a handgame stick set and a trophy.

Todd, 22, is one of five students attending Canadian universities and colleges who have been notified they will receive $4,000 towards their education this year through the Royal Bank's Native Student Awards Program. Todd and the other award recipients will receive $4,000 annually for educational expenses for a maximum four years of university or two years of college.

Saddle Lake students participate in Heritage Fair

Six students from Omchaminahos Elementary School in Saddle Lake First Nation will be coming to Edmonton to take part in the Edmonton Regional Heritage School Fair May 13.

The students have worked together on a project for this fifth annual fair, and will be presenting it during the competition, which will take place in the Alberta Legislative Assembly pedway starting at 9 a.m. This is the first time students from a Native school have participated.
