Mind, body, spirit to control diabetes

The Aboriginal Diabetes Wellness program has helped more than 2,100 people manage the illness in its four years of existence.

"It was iniated because of the need to provide Aboriginal people with a diabetes program," said program manager Elmer Ghostkeeper. "As you know, there is a large amount of our people with diabetes in our communities. It is estimated at about 26 percent."

Ghostkeeper said some communities have even more, but on average one out of every four Aboriginal people have diabetes.

A pilot project being run on the Siksika First Nation is quickly becoming a model for other First Nations and rural communities across Canada that want an effective and community-based approach to addressing Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).

The Siksika Awakening FAS Prevention Program started in October 1999 and is scheduled to run until March 2002. The pilot project is one of three currently running in Alberta through the Alberta partnership on fetal alcohol syndrome, and the only one operating in a First Nations community.

In one powerful voice, 115 Elders declared their grand vision of unity to protect the futures of their children and grandchildren. This vision is explained in a report released in October.

From Aug. 21 to 25 the Treaty 6, 7 and 8 Seventh Generation Elders' Gathering took place at Kapwe'no First Nation. Elders from Metis settlements and Treaty 8 areas in British Colombia and Saskatchewan also attended.

Off-reserve meetings held

The Native Council of Canada (Alberta) is conducting its annual general meeting in three cities in northern, central and southern centres in the province to ensure a high degree of participation by the non-status and off-reserve Indians it represents.

The first meeting was held in Anzac near the Fort McMurray First Nation, on Oct. 21, when Doris Ronnenberg was confirmed again as NCCA president.
