“It is impossible to come out of the system okay.”
Those were the words relayed by Child and Youth Advocate Del Graff, on behalf of a mother, who lost her two boys to suicide.
On Monday, Graff released a report that recounted the deaths of the two brothers, ages 15 and 18, and five other Indigenous youth in a period of 18-months. All seven children, ranging in ages from 14-18 years, took their own lives during 2013 and 2014 while either receiving services from Child Intervention Services or having received services within two years of their deaths.
April 22, 2016. Firearms and drugs seized from a residence in Fort Macleod have led to charges being laid against five people. Seized were powder cocaine, crack cocaine and marihuana, worth $15,000 on the street, as well as two rifles and one prohibited firearm, a machete and knife, and approximately $1,000 in cash. Facing numerous charges under the Controlled Drug and Substance Act and Criminal Code are Sherman Laboucan, 38, of Wabasca; Kimberly Creighton, 56, and Wacey Creighton, 30, of Fort Macleod; and, Mekdela Kitaw, 21, and Khawa Jany, 19, of Calgary.
April 25, 2016. A group of First Nations youth from Siksika and Calgary are in Cuba for a month long tour. Wandering Spirit Native Awareness features dancers ranging in age from 12 to 20 years. Over the past three months they have been crafting their dance regalia and perfecting their choreography, including learning new techniques like the Metis jig. Many of the young dancers balanced school and training three days a week in preparation for the tour. "It's a very prestigious stage," said Jackie Soppit, the executive director of Wandering Spirit Native Awareness.
