Imagine Shakespeare's comedic flight of fancy, A Mid-summer Night's Dream, with most of the principal characters portrayed by First Nations performers.

Chinook run worse than expected

Earlier this year, West Coast fishermen were shocked to learn that the Somass chinook salmon run was estimated to number only 10,000 fish. Now those same fishermen are horrified to discover that only 4,600 adult chinook have returned to the Stamp/Somass system.

Data from the central counter at Stamp Falls also registered more than 2,000 jacks (immature males), which is the only bright spot to this year's return.

Sparked into action by derogatory remarks expressed by rock music mogul Bruce Allen on a Vancouver radio station, a group called One Voice Has Power has vowed to keep diligent vigil on all forms media.

After Allen's Aug. 3 on-air rant, the group, spearheaded by Kat Norris, began a information blitz calling for community action by way of a demonstration in front of the offices of CFOX.

Canoes' journey to Anacla proves dangerous

Rough waters at Cape Beale proved hazardous for six canoes travelling to Anacla to take part in opening celebrations for the House of Huu-ay-aht. One canoe flipped, and another swamped in the six- to eight-foot cross swells caused by tide change. Four young paddlers were taken to Bamfield Hospital for observation after showing signs of hypothermia. Some people were in the water for close to 20 minutes before being picked up by the Coast Guard and support boats.
