Montana Band opens school

Under the budget and ahead of schedule, the Meskanahk Ka-Nipa-Wit School on the Montana reserve opened its doors for the first day of classes, Monday, March 3. The $4.5-million project, funded trough Indian affairs and the Montana Band, welcomed more than 130 students into its gathering circle to burn Sweetgrass, pray and begin a new era in education in this community.

"It has been a long time coming," said Darrell Strongman, Band Councilor with the education portfolio. "I am a scholar from the old school. The new school is quite spectacular."

The staff at the Cansafe Centre in Llyodminister are dedicated to the health, safety, and welfare of people in the working industry. They know that the kind of knowledge needed to keep workers safe doesn't come cheaply.

Cansafe, which specializes in addressing problems and creating solutions for Aboriginal workers in Alberta and Saskatchewan, operates on the principle that there is no simple package approach.

Each settlement or First Nation has its own problems and needs in terms of industrial safety.

Getting its "house in order" and "restoring Aboriginal rights" are two of the prominent concerns that the Native Council of Canada (Alberta) at West Edmonton Mall's Fantasyland Hotel on Feb 27, Sinclair accused government of "undermining us," and "off-loading policies," that are "denying off-reserve Indians any rights." The off-reserve population, he estimates, ranges anywhere from 50 per cent in Quebec.

Sometimes hard work pays off, as it has for 22 ?year-old Clarence Houle Jr. Whether it's in or out of the rink, as a defenseman for the Red Deer College Kings Houle gives it his all at every game and practice. Coach Ray Bennett describes him as a competitive leader.

"He's above average in talent, not the top, but he puts himself up there because of his work ethic," said Bennett.
