The staff at the Cansafe Centre in Llyodminister are dedicated to the health, safety, and welfare of people in the working industry. They know that the kind of knowledge needed to keep workers safe doesn't come cheaply.
Cansafe, which specializes in addressing problems and creating solutions for Aboriginal workers in Alberta and Saskatchewan, operates on the principle that there is no simple package approach.
Each settlement or First Nation has its own problems and needs in terms of industrial safety.
The company focuses on two main areas in its training: industrial safety, and employment skills, which include computer skills, time management, teamwork, resumes, interviews, and how to keep a job once you have it.
Cansafe also helps in the area of work placement on a temporary basis in conjunction with selected companies. This allows individuals to build conference and gain experience.
When Kurt Large, from Sadle Lake, found out that he needed blowout prevention. The course gave him the additional expertise he needed for upgrading and promotion I his job.
"The four day course was pretty tough," explained Large, "and a lot of math was involved, I found the test to be very challenging and I picked up on a lot of information with a real emphasis on safety while keeping well under control."
"We learned special procedures, rig safety, equipment maintenance, personal safety, and about the responsibilities of the crew when they have to work in a team to kill a wildcat well," he continued. "We also had to learn the safety procedures on how to control the pressure from the formation so that the rest of the crew can work safely on the site."
