AFN reeling, budget cut by half

The Assembly of First Nations will have to operate this fiscal year on about half of the money it received last year. The Department of Indian Affairs (DIAND) has cuts AFN funding to $12 million from $19.8 million last year.

Sources say a variety of programs and positions are in jeopardy and morale is low. Several officials have said the quality of service provided to First Nations by the national organization is already suffering.

The Northern Lights Casino in Prince Albert is now on reserve land.

The land on which the 1,600 seat casino sits, owned by Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation, received reserve status on June 18, becoming the 18th urban reserve in Saskatchewan, and the third within the boundaries of Prince Albert.

If you're considering a career in the gaming industry, you might want to give the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College (SIFC) a call.

The SIFC is joining forces with the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation, the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA), and the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority to offer a new gaming administration program, allowing students to earn a diploma or degree in gaming management.

The partners signed a memorandum of understanding June 15, paving the way for the launch of the new program this fall.

Do you have a favorite book written in the past year by a Saskatchewan writer? If so, you only have until the end of July to enter it as a nominee for this year's Saskatchewan Book Awards.

Nominations for books written between Oct. 1, 2000 and July 31, 2001 must be submitted by July 31. A second deadline of Sept. 30 has been set for books published between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30.

Aboriginal writers were well represented among last year's winners, claiming three of the 12 awards given out.

Okay. For the past few months, I've been writing about Aboriginal issues, thoughts and some ideologies. I've taken a token of responsibility as a young, Aboriginal male and hopefully, lived up to what my grandfathers may have wanted. So, as a young, Aboriginal male, what do I have to say about my white girlfriend?

I mean, I preach about keeping in touch with our heritage, our ways, yet I live with a girl who is white. What do I have to say?
