First Nations Winter Games a great success

The 2006 First Nations Winter Games took place in Regina from April 16 to 21, giving young athletes from across the province a chance to meet and compete.
The games were hosted by Gordon First Nation but were held in nearby Regina to take advantage of the state-of-the-art sporting facilities in the city.

Athletes competed in hockey, volleyball, broomball and badminton, as well as in one demonstration sport-basketball. They also had an opportunity to take part in cultural and social events during their stay.

Poundmaker making waves with signature style

He may be relatively new to the world of art but Dallas Poundmaker is quickly making his presence known on the Canadian art scene.

"I've seen a lot of artists in my time but I've never seen one that caught on like Dallas did," said Arnold Isbister, an artist and author who has been a mentor to Poundmaker. "He paints fast. He doesn't analyze anything. It just comes to him and he just paints it."

Past struggles provide inspiration for artist

Ever since he was a young child of three or four, Phil Lafreniere has had an interest in art. Now in his fifties, he uses his artistic talents to create paintings and carvings that allow him to express his creativity and his connections to his culture and his family. But the images he creates in paint and wood also reflect the life he's lived during those intervening years-a life that was often hard and filled with challenges and hardships he's worked hard to overcome.

Traditional art exhibition to tour the province

An exhibit of traditional Indigenous art created by some of Saskatchewan's most gifted artists is going on the road, giving people living outside of Regina and Saskatoon a chance to view the diverse collection of works.

Clearing A Path: An Exhibition of Traditional Indigenous Art opened in the First Nations University of Canada Gallery in Regina in mid-November 2005, then moved to the gallery at Wanuskewin Heritage Park near Saskatoon until the end of February. Now the exhibition is on the move again, scheduled to be shown in 24 locations across the province between now and 2008.
