Métis Elder receives Blackfoot name
Lethbridge College Métis Elder Rod McLeod (centre) is flanked by Blackfoot Elder Francis First Charger (at podium) and Bruce Wolf Child. McLeod was given the Blackfoot name of Iistakata, which means “Dependable One,” as part of the college’s FNMI Days held Oct. 23-25. “The event brings a wonderful energy to the college that solidifies our commitment to sharing the heritage and traditions of the FNMI people,” said Robin Little Bear, FNMI manager. New Inuit Elder Christina Tikivik-Sherman also gave a presentation.
Morley students captured in Through the Lens
Celebrating the artistry and impact of Through the Lens a new book, Through the Lens - Encouraging Creativity in Youth, will be released by the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies on Feb. 2, 2013, as part of Exposure, the Calgary Banff Canmore Photography Festival. Each year Through the Lens is made possible through the talents of young people, the unwavering support of the schools and the teachers involved, the local communities and the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies. Since 1997, over 500 students have participated in Through the Lens.
Larger space for Outreach program celebrated
In October, the four Hobbema Nations celebrated the official opening of the newly renovated Maskwacis Outreach School at Ermineskin Cree Nation. The outreach school was initiated in 2010 at Samson Cree Nation to accommodate students who wanted to return to high school. As enrolment increased, the need for a new facility was required. As a result, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada committed $500,000 in funding to convert an existing building to school use.
Portage College, U of C partner to offer BSW
A partnership between Portage College and the University of Calgary will allow students to complete a Bachelor of Social Work degree at Portage College in Lac La Biche. This cohort will begin classes in the fall of 2013 and receive classroom-based instruction delivered by the University of Calgary. “This partnership brings a degree opportunity in the field of social work to our students,” said Portage College Dean of Business, Arts and Humanities, Guy Gervais.
Indspire award winners include two Albertans
Jacqueline Guest and Lloyd (Sonny) Flett were among the 14 outstanding Indigenous Canadians recently named as recipients of the 2013 Indspire Awards. Guest was awarded in the arts category and Flett in the environment and natural resources area. Formerly called the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards, the Indspire Awards have, for 20 years, celebrated the significant contributions of Indigenous people in Canada.
Cold Lake First Nation appeal denied by court
The Alberta Court of Appeal has denied the Cold Lake First Nations’ application to appeal a decision by the Energy Resources Conservation Board that the ERCB did not have the jurisdiction to determine the adequacy of Crown consultation regarding a bitumen recovery project within the CLFN’s treaty territory.
