Red Hawks explode to win ball hockey tourney

It was one wild weekend, a real rock 'em, sock 'em time at Edmonton's Ben Calf Robe School as it played host to 13 Aboriginal ball hockey teams on the Feb. 3-4 weekend.

Sponsored by Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society's Wind Dancers youth program co-ordinated by Bonnie Belhumeur, the two-day event was a fund-raiser for a youth retreat being planned by the Urban Multi-purpose Aboriginal Youth Centre program for late March.

Role models reach out to students

The Calgary Board of Education's launch of its Aboriginal Role Model Directory in early January marked both a beginning and an end. It was the completion of four years of work compiling a directory that highlights the accomplishments of 60 Aboriginal men and women from a variety of fields and professions. But, more importantly, perhaps, it also marked the beginning of an ongoing project to expand and update the directory annually.

Energy board winds up Epcor hearings

The struggle concerning a burial ground between Epcor and representatives of the Aboriginal community may be ongoing, but the public hearings are over.

The controversy stems from Epcor's request to build a 170-megawatt, gas-fired turbine in the Rossdale Flats, immediately south of downtown Edmonton in the North Saskatchewan River valley.

The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) has wound up its Jan. 9 to 24 public hearings in Edmonton regarding Epcor's proposal. That followed a 25-day earlier hearing that ran last October and November.

Tansi!

Economy on a roll?

Further to Tsuu T'ina First Nation's oil strike, I reported that they are pumping that valuable black gold. What I could not find out for our last issue was whether Tsuu T'ina also has "the belly" of oil on their property. In recent conversation with the band, I have been informed that, yes, they do!

The band is hosting a Valentine's Day Dance at the Seven Chiefs sportsplex on Feb. 14.
