Cardinal was in her element and thoroughly enjoyed sharing her knowledge of the child development wheel with the 75-plus delegates from all over Alberta, the NWT and Nunavut who attended her workshop, Effective Parenting from an Aboriginal Cultural Perspective.

The University of Alberta hosted the Forum on Aboriginal Health Research on March 14 and 15. Several talks and lectures over the two days were designed to raise awareness of the extent of the Native health crisis and the efforts being undertaken to address it. Internationally acclaimed respiratory health scientist Dr. Malcolm King organized the event at his home university, which featured Dr. Jeff Reading, an epidemiologist at the University of Toronto and a member of the Mohawk Nation.

"It's more than just a learning facility," said John Balon, project manager for Ledcor Industries Limited. "It's a part of their heritage."

Balon was one of the key Ledcor employees who took a vision of a new school for Ermineskin Cree Nation and made it a reality.

On March 12, Elders, students, parents, teachers, engineers and construction workers gathered to celebrate the grand opening of the Ermineskin Junior Senior High School on the reserve.

That's according to Bernard Gauthier, director of facilties with the Miyo Wahkohtowin Community Education Authority, which runs the education portfolio for the band. He has overseen the entire design process, project management of the construction, and the implementation of technology into the school.

"On budget, of course," said Gauthier, laughing.

Employment centre move sparks demand for services

The Aboriginal Career and Development Centre in this southern Alberta city has the potential to service one-quarter of the city's population as a result of its relocation.

It offers employment and training services to approximately 17,500 urban Aboriginal people in the Lethbridge area. The number is so high, said executive director Gerald Crick, because in addition to the Métis and Cree populations, Lethbridge borders both the Blood and Peigan reserves.
