Native Awareness Day has kept a day to highlight Native culture and entertainment at Concordia University College of Alberta for 14 years. The event is organized by students in the university and college entrance program for Aboriginal adults, and by Aboriginal students in undergraduate degree programs.

On March 9, Dr. Kraemer welcomed guests and thanked everyone for participating. Two hundred visitors came to the Tegler Centre on the Highlands campus to be entertained by the Billy Joe Green Blues Band, Ben Calf Robe Dance Troupe, Buffalo Tail Singers, and dancers Rena Reid, Adrian LaChance, Larissa Bird, Edna Rain, Lori Bearhead, Marge Rooke, Mary Rain, Krystynna Night, Olin Rain, Mark McKennit, Stan Pasqua, and Sylvain Keewatin, who gave traditional drumming, singing and dancing performances. Elder James Rain shared traditional teachings and meanings of ceremonies.

Master of ceremonies Rocky Dumais explained the variations in dance styles and outfits worn for the mini-powwow.

Displays showcased Native artisans from as far away as Nunavut, educational opportunities at both Concordia and the U of A, and services available through the Red Road Healing Society. Students served a buffet lunch of elk stew and bannock along with veggies and deli treats. The day ended with a give-away and a round dance in the traditional way to thank guests for coming to the event.
