First Nations chiefs at the Confederacy of Nations on May 9 told Assembly of First Nations executive that more urgency needs to be injected into discussions about federal firearms legislation and how it affects Native people and their right to hunt.

Discussions between the AFN and Justice Canada continue though June 30, the date when an amnesty allowing unregistered Native gun owners to purchase ammunition will expire, fast approaches.

The Red River West Rendezvous, to be held from July 5 to 8 at the Victoria Fish and Game Club, is a "modern day resurrection of the old Metis rendezvous in the 1860s," described organizer and co-founder Richard Larson.

The idea was conceived around a campfire one early morning five years ago, when a few good friends decided to put their heads together and start a cultural festival for Metis people. Now in its fourth year, the number of participants has grown exponentially.

The 14th International Two-Spirit Gathering won't take place until Pride weekend in August, but preparations are well under way and interest from all over the world promises a diverse and spiritual experience.

Organized by passionate individuals at the most grassroot level, the annual gathering offers two-spirited Aboriginals a place to interact and share their experiences in a safe environment.

The gathering is for Aboriginal people and for Aboriginals only.
