Page 11

Each year, communities across Saskatchewan set June 21 aside for celebrating the contributions, traditions and culture of Aboriginal people. These are just some of the events being planned to celebrate National Aboriginal Day (NAD) in Saskatchewan this year.

In Regina, NAD celebrations are being held at the same time as Urban Treaty Days. NAD events will take place June 21, while Urban Treaty Days go June 20 and 21. The celebrations will be held in Wascana Park.

Plan trains Aboriginal workers for mining careers

Page 10

About 42 per cent of the people employed in mining in northern Saskatchewan are Aboriginal, thanks in part to the Multi-Party Training Plan.

The plan began in 1993 as a five-year initiative designed to provide people in Northern Saskatchewan with the skills and training needed to find employment in the mining sector.

When the initial five years of the plan ended in 1998, a second five-year phase was added, which is set to end in June, 2003.

One of the highlights of Prince Charles' recent visit to Saskatchewan was his receiving of an Indian name. Gordon Oakes, Elder and past chief of the Nekaneet band, gave the Prince his name in a brief naming ceremony at Wanuskewin Heritage Park, near Saskatoon.

"I had a lot I wanted to say to him. It was a great honor to give him this name and it will be a day to remember," Oakes said.
