It started 17 years ago with a salmon feast for the friendship centre's neighbors, and has developed into a three-day event that attracts as many as 50,000 guests each year.

The First People's Festival, held at the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria on Aug. 10, 11 and 12, was a real crowd pleaser, with 350 dancers, singers and drummers performing and another 30 artists showcasing their work.

The Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development announced an investment of $2.8 million for Osoyoos Indian Band Development Corporations for the construction of the Nk'Mip Cellars winery, expansion of vineyards and the development of the Desert and Heritage Interpretive Centre.

There will be 20- to 25 acres of organically grown grapes planted at the winery site. While the grapes would be marketable to any premium wine producer in British Columbia, they will go to the Nk"mip Cellars.

Ahousaht youth work to repair Walk the Wild Side Trail

The Walk the Wild Side Trail, one of Ahousaht's tourism ventures, received a much-needed face-lift this summer thanks to the efforts of the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks, Ahousaht administration and four Ahousaht youth workers.

Dwayne Little, Ivey Campbell, Terri Robinson and Floyd Campbell Jr., along with their supervisor, Richard Mirau, have been busy widening the trail, building bridges, stair cases and repairing cedar board walks along several kilometres of the majestic trail.
