The Keeseekoose First Nation has a new partner in its battle to confront youth mental health issues.

The East Central Health District (ECHD) and Keeseekoose have joined forces to create the Circle of Strength program, designed to help address the mental health issues affecting the children and grandchildren of residential school survivors, who along with the survivors are still suffering from the effects of the residential schools.

Aboriginal drama students from across Canada travelled to Wahpeton Dakota First Nation this summer to take part in an intensive month-long summer drama school. This is the second year the First Nation has played host to the program, which was started last year by Carol Greyeyes of the Toronto-based Center for Indigenous Theatre.

The students studied under experienced Aboriginal performers, including actors Curtis Ahenakew and Herbie Barnes, powwow dancer Boye Ladd, modern dancer Geraldine Larson, and writer Bernalda Wheeler.

The Saskatchewan First Nations' Women's Council (SFNWC) favors a "carrot-and-stick" approach to the problem of child sex exploitation.

The "carrot" should be better-targeted and more extensive programs to help children and families get out of the child sex trade, said the SFNWC's chair, Okanese First Nation Chief Mary-Anne Daywalker -Pelletier. The "stick" should be tougher laws against those charged with hiring child prostitutes.

It appears that things are finally turning around for the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA), after over a year of controversy and turmoil.

Two announcements about the gaming authority were made on July 25. The first, made by SIGA, announced that the authority's acting president and CEO Edmund Bellegarde had been given the position on a permanent basis. Bellegarde had been acting president since last summer.
