Advocates for disabled Alberta Aboriginal people expressed mixed satisfaction and concern over a recent federal report that recommended that the federal government take some responsibility for the "jurisdictional complexities" that bind Aboriginal people with disabilities.

"I was very happy (with the report) but at the same time I was wondering if it's just going to be another study," said Toni Tallman, president of the Calgary Native Disable Society and a member of the Premier's Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities.

A former grand chief of Treaty 8 has decided to throw his hat into the provincial political ring. Tony Mercredi, who also served as the elected chief of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation between 1990 and 1995, announced in December that he would be seeking the Liberal nomination for the huge Athabasca-Wabasca riding.

"I've been a non-partisan Liberal for a long time," Mercredi said. "Which is to say that I haven't participate (in the party) except by voting."

Mercredi said that he's the only candidate for the nomination, as far as he knew.

Powwow brings together families

They came from the east and, though they weren't the traditional wise men from the Bible, they were wise to seek out the Montana First Nation and the Fourth Annual Wilfred Buffalo Memorial Christmas Powwow.

It was not just the Christmas date that drew dancers and drummers alike from across the prairies and Northwest Territories, it was almost $19,000 in prize money. And, for those who didn't participate, the prize was enjoying first-class dancing, drumming and singing.

Sam, a part president of the Metis Association of Alberta, and his wife Edna, welcomed a few hundred well-wishers to an evening filled with music, memories and laughter, Jigging and fiddling abounded. Master of ceremonies was George Tuccaro.
