TORONTO - Of the 14 recipients of this year's National Aboriginal Achievement Awards, six are from British Columbia and two are Yukon-based. The award show is scheduled for March 10 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver. Only one Alberta-based winner will be honored.
Tsuu T'ina Chief Roy Whitney, chairman of Industry Canada's Aboriginal Business Canada, wins in the Business and Commerce category for the success he has attained in initiating a successful series of business ventures creating economic prosperity for his First Nation. Whitney joins B.C.'s Dr. Jo-ann Archibald, Chief Simon Baker, Dr. Joseph Gosnell, Sr., Judge Steven Point, artist Art Thompson and BC Treaty Commissioner Miles Richardson, as well as Yukon's Paul Birckel and Edith Josie, Ontario's John Bernard, Manitoba's Fjola Hart-Wasekeesika, Quebec's Waneek Horn-Miller and Dr. Konrad Sioui, and Nunavut's Leetia Ineak in the national spotlight.
The awards show will be hosted by Smoke Signals star Evan Admas, and Grey Owl's Annie Galipeau, with a performance by Susan Aglukark and a special appearance by actor Graham Greene.
