With all the qualifiers and play downs for the North American Indigenous Games now behind them, the Indigenous Sport Council (Alberta) now has close to 800 provincial athletes for Team Alberta. The team is preparing for the Aug. 3 to 10 Indigenous games in Victoria.
The council's efforts were recently given a shot in the arm when provincial MLA Dave Hancock (Federal and Intergovernmental Affairs and Aboriginal Affairs), and Shirley McClelland (Community Development) presented a cheque of approximately $300,000 to assist the council in getting Team Alberta registered and to the games.
The council is still in need of coaches and chaperones and is requesting volunteers to contact organizers at the Enoch Reserve office (470-3700).
One of the council's upcoming fundraising events occurs June 21 when it hosts the second annual golf tournament at the Indian Lakes Golf Club at Enoch.
Council director Ted Hodgson reports that Oct. 16 to 18 has been scheduled for the fall conference which includes inductions to the Indigenous Sport Hall of Fame.
"People at the community levels should now begin to gather information and submit nominations for this year's inductees," said Hodgson.
Nomination forms are available from local recreation offices or the council at Enoch. Those considered for induction must be Aboriginal Alberta athletes who have achieved as participants or as builders of sports, although builders can also include non-Aboriginals.
