February 29, 2016. The Revenant, filmed largely in Alberta and with a large supporting cast of First Nations actors, took three Oscars at the Sunday ceremony. “I especially want to congratulate the more than 700 Albertans who worked as cast or crew on this production, including makeup artists from Canmore, actors from Siksika Nation and production crew from Calgary. I know their work was a significant contribution to winning these awards,” Minister of Culture and Tourism Ricardo Miranda said in a statement. The Revenant was nominated for 12 Academy Awards, the most of any production shot fully or partially in Alberta, and took home three Oscars: leading actor, achievement in directing and achievement in cinematography.
