Premier Alison Redford was absent when provincial leaders from across the country met with Aboriginal organizations on the first day of a three-day Council of the Federation meeting in Ontario. Redford instead met with officials from the Insurance Bureau of Canada to discuss Alberta’s recent flooding. Also absent was Newfoundland Premier Kathy Dunderdale. Discussed was support for a national inquiry on murdered and missing Aboriginal women and girls. “It’s probably for me, my perception or interpretation that they’re sending a message saying that they’re not in support for this national inquiry,” said Michelle Audette, president of the Native Women’s Association of Canada. The Alberta NDP has condemned Redford for missing the meeting saying it “shows a lack of respect for First Nations.” However, Redford issued a written statement to CBC News, saying, “I support the decision taken by premiers today and look forward to continuing to work with them to ensure we’re supporting Aboriginal and Métis women, nation-wide.”
