As many as 700 Aboriginal athletes representing Alberta at the 1997 North American Indigenous Games in Victoria this summer will split a $200,000 grant from the Government of Alberta. The grant was presented to the Alberta Indigenous Sports Council by Community Development Minister Shirley McClellan and Minister Responsible for Aboriginal Affairs Dave Hancock at a May 5 luncheon at the Alberta Legislature. The funds go toward Team Alberta at the international sporting event being held Aug. 3 to 10 this year. The Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation provided $100,000 of the $200,000 grant. The games, which were first held in Edmonton in 1990, provide an opportunity for Aboriginal youth to compete on common ground at an international competition.
