The fifth annual Paddling for Compassion event is scheduled for Sept. 16. Organized by Cornerstone Counselling Centre, the event not only raises money for an excellent cause but also provides the perfect occasion for people to get to know the river so many Edmontonians love-the North Saskatchewan.
Paddlers literally go with the flow-paddling with the current from Devon to Laurier Park in Edmonton, a distance of about 32 kilometers. Proceeds from the fundraiser go to the Cornerstone's Compassion Fund, which subsidizes counselling for clients who come to the centre for therapy but who cannot afford the entire fee. Rates at Cornerstone are on a sliding fee scale, based on family income. About 1,200 clients a year meet with one of its 14 counsellors with about half requiring financial assistance.
Event brochures are available at all Edmonton Public Library locations. Call 482-6215 or check the Web site for further information or to register, www.cornerstonecounselling.com.
