Terrying About

Tansi!

And, a Happy New Year to all of our devoted and new readers out there. I do hope you all had a super Christmas and look forward to '98. What kind of resolutions have you made?

Me? My resolution was to spend more time with my 11-year-old son and improve on my editorial deadlines. Hear that Deborah and Rob?

There is always a lot of activity at this time of year. There were a number of round dances, Christmas parties, open houses and so on.

Up at Slave Lake, Zone 5 of the Metis Nation of Alberta held its annual Christmas party with special guests Senator Thelma Chalifoux and MLA Pearl Calahasen in attendance. It was a great shin-dig at the friendship centre in Slave Lake. Chalifoux addressed the crowd, telling of her years in Slave Lake and the work she did back then.

Zone 5 President Wayne Cunningham and Zone president Trevor Gladue were pleased with the dinner and dance which had a Wabasca band, Bad Timing, play for the people.

Despite their name, the band did keep time and offered their usual fare of good music. By the way folks, thanks for making my stay up your way a pleasurable one.

Down south, at Lethbridge, the Sik-Ooh-Kotoki Friendship Society there has a new director and president in the persons of Sherman Butler and Kirk Buffalo.

Then, there is the Calgary friendship centre which is still going through some growing pains and structural changes. They have an acting director and management board for now but will, hopefully, find a suitable candidate for the executive director position. The board president is Allen Girioux.

Sucker Creek First Nation went to the election polls not long ago and it looks as if the Willier clan is in fairly solid up there. Alvin Cardinal got in as chief. Two former council members re-elected were Ronnie and Roderick Willier. The three others voted into council were John L. Willier, Beatrice Wright and Norm Calliou. Congratulations to all. Hope you do a great job for the band during 1998.
