March 10, 2016. The University of Alberta has changed its home page. There is now a new hot button, marked by the symbol of a buffalo. The Aboriginal/Indigenous Index of Web Links is a directory of links to projects focused on community engagement and well-being, research and scholarly resources, educational opportunities and councils and protocols that exist at the University of Alberta related to Indigenous and Aboriginal students and communities. This new link is in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s urging of educational institutions to step up and close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners and learnings. On Wednesday, UAlberta unveiled another initiative called Inspiring Possibilities, which aims to encourage Indigenous students to continue on to graduate studies. “The challenge for the University of Alberta will be to ensure sustainable growth of initiatives as we seek to respond to the report of the TRC in a thoughtful and meaningful way. Collaboration, capacity building and communication of our successes will be important to achieve real change in our institution and to sustain the work of Indigenous teaching, learning and research,” said UAlberta Deputy Provost Wendy Rogers in an on-line statement.
