"chequing out" welfare clients
Hay River's Soaring Eagle Friendship Centre has been given the green light to hand out monthly social assistance cheques. The Northwest Territories government approved the transfer of the welfare program to the centre in late April. The first cheques were handed out to eligible clients at the beginning of this month.
