The Fort McMurray Métis is hoping to run about four membership drives a year, with the next tentative date set for somewhere in the first part of December, 2014.

Anyone with Métis heritage and can prove it, is potentially eligible to be a member of the Métis Nation of Alberta.

Kyle Harrietha is the General Manager of McMurray Métis and says there are many benefits in becoming a MNA member, like educational opportunities and social events.

“Mcmurray Métis has a number of cultural activities throughout the year like membership meetings once a month, golf tournaments, Métis festival… cultural things like trapper training, canoe trips and that sort of thing. We want to give everybody who’s eligible the opportunity to become part of a what is a very active Métis association here in Fort McMurray.”

Harrietha adds the process is usually a long and difficult one and he’s hoping these events will help speed things up.

You need a current photo ID, genealogy or family tree information, two passport size photos and a long or short form birth certificate with baptismal record.

Check in with the Metis Nation of Alberta or Fort McMurray Métis to find out more information about upcoming dates and requirements.
