The constitution of the Iroquois Confederacy-the Great Law of Peace-is widely recognized as one of the most democratic political structures ever conceived: it is based on principles of persuasion, compromise and consensus-building.
Before the arrival of Europeans, a number of Aboriginal groups had developed extensive trading and economic systems. Items traded included fur and silver. Wampum (beads made from polished shells) was commonly used as currency.
Much of what we find in today's medicine cabinet comes from traditional Aboriginal healing practices. Witch hazel, petroleum jelly, and a pain reliever derived from the bark of the willow tree are just a few of many Aboriginal discoveries that preceded modern medicine.
Parkas, mukluks, leather mitts and fur coats all stem from traditional Aboriginal clothing designs.
Centuries ago, Aboriginal peoples developed sophisticated agricultural systems for growing and harvesting food. Popular foods introduced by Aboriginal peoples include potatoes, onions, squash, beans and several different kinds of corn. Many foods we think of as typically Canadian, including spearmint gum, taffy, maple syrup, wild rice, and popcorn also come from Aboriginal origins.
