Aboriginal Affairs Critic Carolyn Bennett showcased Liberal Commitments to education funding and economic opportunities for First Nations and spoke about how, “it has to be about preserving and enhancing language and culture,” but also, “All Canadians need to know our shared history including the difficult parts of that so we could go forward in a good way.”
The Liberals have committed to 2.6 billion dollars over 4 years in education funding with an immediate investment of 515 million dollars per year in core annual funding for kindergarten through grade twelve for First Nations.
September tenth marks World suicide prevention day.
Did you know that 126 aboriginal males out of 1 hundred thousand are more likely to die of suicide. Compare that to the 24 out of 1 hundred thousand for the general population and that is an increase of 5.25 percent.
Aboriginal women die of suicide at a rate of 35 per 1 hundred thousand in contrast are the 5 per 1-hundred thousand for non-Aboriginal women.
The numbers increase as we travel more northward. Inuit people are 11 times more likely to die from suicide than the general population.
Many would attribute isolation and lack of community involvement as possible triggers for the higher rate of avoidable deaths in the Aboriginal community.
