The annual Oilers rookie game against the University of Alberta Golden Bears is moving to Rexall Place.
The game will be played on Wednesday, September 16th.
It’s the first time the game will not be played at Clare Drake Arena. The Golden Bears have won 13 of the 24 all-time matchups.
Connor McDavid is expected to suit up for the Oilers.
Justin Trudeau an the Liberal party have committed to delivering major funding for veterans.
The Liberal government will, if elected:
• re-establish lifelong pensions for injured veterans, and increase the value of the disability award;
• invest 25-million to expand access to the Permanent Impairment Allowance;
• invest 40-million to increase the Earnings Loss Benefit to 90 percent of pre-release salary;
• invest 80-million per year to create a new Veterans Education Benefit that provides full support for the cost of up to four years of college, university, or technical education;
• invest 100-million per year to expand support for families of veterans;
• increase the veteran survivor’s pension amount from 50 percent to 70 percent;
• double funding to the Last Post Fund to ensure that veterans receive a dignified burial;
• re-open the nine Veterans Affairs service offices closed by the Harper Conservatives;
• fully implement all of the Auditor General’s recommendations on enhancing mental health service delivery to veterans;
• hire 400 new service delivery staff, including new case managers, at Veterans Affairs; and
• budget 20-million to create two new centres of excellence in veterans’ care.
According to the press release Justin Trudeau said he wants to ensure that no veteran has to fight the government for the support and compensation they have earned.
Both eastbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway have been shut down due to a two vehicle collision involving a minivan and a semi-truck.
Initial reports have the Semi traveling West bound on Highway 1, west of Scott Lake hill, when it crossed the center meridian and hit the east bound Minivan.
Emergency crews were trying to remove a person trapped in the van after it collided with a semi-truck on the Trans-Canada Highway west of Scott Lake Hill.
STARS air ambulance was on scene to take a man in his 70s to the Foothills hospital in Calgary.
EMS says three people were critically injured — including two children who were taken to Alberta Children's Hospital by ground ambulance. Two other people are in serious to stable condition, and four people are in stable condition.
Friday morning marked the 138th anniversary of the signing of treaty 6. Mayor Don Iveson and City councillors, invited Edmontonians and all citizens of Alberta’s Treaty 6 territory to join him in hosting Treaty 6 First Nations leaders at City Hall in honour of Treaty 6 Recognition Day.
Premier Rachel Notley was also in attendance.
The Mayor and Council, the Grand Chief and the Chiefs of Treaty 6 First Nations started the day with a traditional ceremony. The flag-raising was held at Sir Winston Churchill Square before the public event and reception in City Hall.
The Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations flag flies outside City Hall for one week following Treaty Six Recognition Day. The Confederacy flag also permanently hangs in the City Room of City Hall to officially acknowledge that Edmonton lies within Treaty 6 territory.
This weekend at noon on Sunday August 23rd the Lubicon Lake Band of Little Buffalo will hold a community feast and ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the installation of an 80 panel, 20.8 kilowatt solar system.
The solar system will power the community health centre. The project was supported by Bullfrog Power, Canadian Energy, Honour the Earth Foundation, W Dusk Energy Group, Greenpeace Canada and actress/ environmentalist Jane Fonda.
Little Bufalo is a northern Cree community in Alberta that has been heavily affected by oil and gas development within their traditional territory. Back in 2011 their traditional lands were the siteof one of the largest oil spills in Alberta’s history.
The solar instillation comes at a time when the provincial government has just started its climate consultations which include a new approach to renewable energy.
As well, earlier in the year Prime Minister Stephen Harper agreed with other global leaders at the G7 summit to abolish the use of fossil fuels by 2100.
Last Friday, youth were invited to participate in the 2015 Métis Youth Gathering presented by Rupertsland Institute.
Youth were provided with an opportunity to build leadership skills, learn about employment opportunities, find out how they could participate in Métis governance, as well as find out more about the Rupertsland Institute programs and services available to them.
Hosted by Métis singer and actor Andrea Menard, attendees heard presentations from Brian Calliou of the Banff Centre of Management, and Shalene Jobin and Kirsten Lindquist from the University of Alberta Faculty of Native Studies.
Brian Calliou’s presentation on Leadership brought a greater understanding of what leadership is, how it is studied and what the Indigenous perspective of leadership is.
Shalene and Kirsten’s Governance Presentation gave a general understanding of Indigenous Governance concepts and models, as well as historical examples of Métis Governance and the shaping of the governance structure of the Métis Nation of Alberta.
Kirsten Lindquist was recently named as the instructor for Native Studies 330: Native Economic Development at the University of Alberta this fall.
