Eight talented and ambitious students have been rewarded for their achievements by receiving the AltaLink 2014 Aboriginal Scholarship. “These scholarship recipients are an impressive group of people,” said Kris Gladue, manager of Aboriginal relations at AltaLink. “They are full of ambition and potential and we want to congratulate them on their diligence, passion and hard work as they further their education and work toward future aspirations.” Rewarded for the hard work were Adrienne Larocque, in her fourth year of her bachelor of arts in Native studies at the University of Alberta and from the Louis Bull Tribe in Treaty 6; Eddie Wolf Child, a member of the Siksika Nation and a student at the University of Lethbridge currently completing his degree in education; Taelina Andreychuk, a member of the Métis Nation, and attending MacEwan University in the psychiatric nursing program; Jarrett Wanihadie, from the Horse Lake First Nation is completing two bachelor of arts degrees in applied psychology and Native studies concurrently through Concordia University College of Alberta and the University of Alberta; Suzanne Edgecombe, a bachelor of commerce student at the University of Alberta, and a member of the Métis Nation; Katrina Hewton-Backfat, a member of the Siksika Nation, who is studying psychology at Athabasca University and hopes to pursue a master’s in the same field; Jaenelle Cardinal, from the Saddle Lake First Nation,who is in her second year at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology studying business administration and management; and Nicole Auger, from the Bigstone Cree Nation, and pursuing a bachelor in communications - journalism at Mount Royal University. The students are awarded based on a set of four criteria – scholastic achievement, community involvement, career goals and financial need.
