Violence against Aboriginal women not an Aboriginal-only issue

Dawn Lavell-Harvard was moved to tears last night when she relayed her young daughter's concern after hearing her mother do an interview with CBC Radio about violence and rates of homicide for Indigenous women. Asked Lavell-Harvard’s preteen: “We’re Native, right? And I’m a girl, right? Mom, does that mean I’m in danger?”

Immediate provincial action needed to combat fentanyl

By the end of this year, there will be more deaths associated with fentanyl overdoses than motor vehicle accidents.

“Fentanyl is one of the biggest issues we are facing right now,” said Tyler White, CEO of Siksika Health Services and the only non-elected member on the province’s Mental Health Review Committee. “It’s a critical issue and it requires brave leadership.”

Food banks stressed with downturn in economy

In the past year the Oski Pasikoniwew Kamik food bank, on the Big Stone Cree Nation, has more than tripled the number of hampers it distributes on a weekly basis.

“In our community, many, nany people are employed in the oilfield and with the cutbacks, our community members are not working anymore,” said Christine Gullion, food bank coordinator.

From handing out 10 to 12 hampers per week numbers have jumped to 35 to 38 per week.

Statistics show high rate of Aboriginal murders and accused in Alberta

This past weekend, the Samson Cree Nation was rocked by violence. Kirsten Cutknife, 20, was found dead in a residence on Nov. 28. Charged with second degree murder in her homicide is Joshua Crier, 19. Crier is also charged with assaulting Zoe Littlechild, 20, with a weapon. Littlechild was not seriously injured. All three young people are from the Samson Cree Nation.
