Guilty plea in toddler’s death

Three teens pleaded guilty to taking turns firing a gun at a home in Hobbema, accidentally killing a five-year-old boy asleep in his bed. Ethan Yellowbird was struck in the head by a bullet fired at the house on the Samson Cree First Nation on July 11, 2011. The teens — aged 13, 16 and 17 at the time — each pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Nov. 7 during what was to have been the first day of their youth court trial in Wetaskiwin. The oldest teen fired one shot above and over the house then passed the gun over. The other two each fired two shots at the house.

Process brought under scrutiny for land-designation referendum

Members of the Siksika First Nation will be voting this month on whether a 131-hectare parcel of resort land should maintain designation for recreational, residential and commercial use.
And while the referendum question, which states in part, “do you agree to the revocation and designation” of these lands, is simple enough, the issue is more complex, says Siksika member Kelly Breaker.

Jody Wilson-Raybould re-elected BC Assembly of First Nations Regional Chief

Jody Wilson-Raybould (Puglaas) re-elected on her first ballot as BC Regional Chief of the BC Assembly of First Nations (BCAFN).

Regional Chief Wilson-Raybould, whose traditional name is Puglaas, is from the Musgamagw Tsawataineuk and Laich-Kwil-Tach Peoples of Northern Vancouver Island. She is a citizen and a council member for We Wai Kai Nation. She will be serving her second consecutive three year term as Regional Chief of the BCAFN.

Court rules against Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation and Métis Nation of Alberta on Jackpine expansion

The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation and the Métis Nation of Alberta had asked the Alberta Court of Appeal to force a regulatory board to make a ruling on whether they had been adequately consulted on the massive project.

The groups also wanted the board to rule on the issue before it made a decision on whether the project could go ahead.

However, in a ruling released Monday, the court said the regulatory board was within its rights to refuse to deal with consultation even though it is an Aboriginal right guaranteed by the constitution.

New Chief of Tsuu T'ina elected

Roy Whitney has been elected Chief of the Tsuu T'ina Nation defeating Sandford Big Plume.

Results have been tabulated in the 2012 Chief and Council election at the Tsuu T'ina Nation, according to a release from the First Nation. Polls closed at 8:00 p.m. Monday.

Debate around a new ring road deal and ways to increase economic development were key issues during the election.

Historical agreement signed for local education efforts

The Muskoday First Nation and the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division have signed an agreement to work together and honour, value and equate Indigenous knowledge with mainstream teachings. Muskoday First Nation Chief Austin Bear said, “This is not an idle, meaningless understanding to be set aside by others. We’re talking about education. (It’s) critical. (It’s) important.

STC, Saskatoon Health Region sign agreement

Last month the Saskatoon Tribal Council and Saskatoon Health Region signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The MOU builds a framework aimed at integrating First Nations and Métis communities in the city’s health sector. STC Chief Felix Thomas said his organization will recruit employees for the health region in hopes they can be retained there. STC will also help Aboriginal businesses get involved with other services in the healthcare sector such as janitorial and laundry.
