Page 8

Onion Lake First Nation is one of three First Nations in Canada selected to take part in a pilot project aimed at reducing smoking among Aboriginal youth.

The First Nation will receive $75,000 to develop and run projects designed to encourage youth within the community not to smoke.

The money is coming from the First Nations Youth Anti-Smoking Project (FNYAS), with sponsorship from two tobacco companies.

Applications for funding under the project were received from more than 30 First Nations communities, with three selected to receive funding.

Wildlife sightings inspire awe

I have been photographing wildlife lately. The picture shown was taken with a zoom lens from about 400 yards. It?s a picture of an elk taken in Alberta. Several years ago, my wife and the two smallest kids were in Jasper, Alberta. There was so much to photograph during our trip through the mountains. I hardly knew where to look first!

Before Pasqua First Nation members decide who gets on their council, the Federal Court of Canada has to determine who?s eligible to run for council.

It?s the latest fallout from a 20-month-old court decision that rules that some of the Indian Act?s regulations for band elections and off-reserve members violate the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Marsha Gordon, a band member who lives in Regina, is challenging new Indian Act regulations that allow off-reserve members to vote in band elections, but not to run.

Do you think Aboriginal people should vote in provincial elections?

Interviews and Photos

By Pamela Sexsmith

?Yes, it is important to vote in provincial elections. I don?t think it undermines treaties. It is important to get involved in provincial politics because we need to work with all levels of government, provincial and federal. We need to work with government, but at the same time, don?t stray too much from treaties. The relationship should be based on treaties.
