Saskatchewan First Nations are working diligently to provide foster families on reserve to allow children in need of care the chance to remain on their home reserves.

Since 1995, Saskatchewan First Nations have been working with Saskatchewan Social Services in a contract arrangement as First Nations Child and Family Service agencies (FNCFS).

On Aug. 28 to Sept. 1, the Institute of Leadership Development (ILD) hosted the 7th World Summit of Young Entrepreneurs at the World Trade Centre in New York City. The ILD, which is based in Toronto, selected New York City to host this year's summit because of its reputation as the business capital of the world. This international business event attracted more than 300 young entrepreneurs from 93 different countries, including 15 Aboriginal delegates from Canada.

A two-part documentary, entitled "A Debt of Honor," demonstrates how Aboriginal war veterans in Canada were treated compared to their non-Aboriginal comrades of the Second World War.

The documentary, which aired on CTV as part of a series called Indigenous Circle, premiered for veterans on Sept. 21 in Saskatoon. On hand were the show's producers Nelson Bird and Norm Shuttleworth, as well as cameraman Gordon Barnett, all of whom work for CTV. Also at the premiere were several of the veterans featured in the film.

As Saskatchewan celebrates Co-op Week Oct. 15 to Oct. 23, a case study that has focused on the benefits of Aboriginal co-ops is coming to a finish.

"It's part of a larger study we're just completing. We've tried to pull together a comprehensive overview of co-operatives in Aboriginal communities in Canada," said Dr. Lou Hammond Ketilson, who is heading the project through the Canadian Co-operative Association and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada.

Families who thought they would never have the chance of owning their own homes have been working together to make sure they do.

Since 1996, the New Beginnings Housing Cooperative (NBHC) has been giving low income families the opportunity of being home owners and the organization has received the 1999 Co-operative Enterprise Award for its work.

Celebrate education

Education Week was celebrated Oct. 15 to Oct. 21, and Chief Little Pine School, a Kindergarten to Grade 12 facility located just off of Highway 16 between Lloydminster and North Battleford, was among a handful of Aboriginal schools to mark the occasion.

School counsellor Jeff Kahm arranged for visitors from a variety of career institutes, as well as one very special role model, to speak to Grades 7 to 12 on each afternoon of Education Week.
