June is graduation month

My wife, Trisha, has been in a bit of a twist for a few days now. Tonight, she is speaking in Saskatoon at the first annual Aboriginal Commerce Graduation. Several of the graduating students have been teasing her about how emotional she can get. She's always telling me that those tears are her strength, but she's worried enough about getting too emotional tonight that she has sat and written down her words. After reading them, I asked to borrow them for my column. These are her words:

Saskatchewan takes step back

Dear Editor:

This viewpoint is in response to recent incidents that highlight why Americans refer to Saskatchewan as the "Mississippi of the North."

The primary incident occurred on Jan. 28 in Saskatoon. An Aboriginal man was picked up by police, deprived of his jacket and abandoned in sub-zero temperature at an isolated location outside the city. Around the same time, the frozen corpses of two other Aboriginal men were found in the same area.

Chili for Children serves 27,000 meals a year

Have you ever watched a six-year-old wrestle with a grilled cheese sandwich? He'll eat out the middle, get cheese on each cheek - then gradually work outward to the crust. Between bites, there's time to spoon in a scoop of hot vegetable soup, slurp some milk, dribbling a little on the chin. He finishes up with some slippery orange jello, wipes his sleeve across his face, beams a big toothless grin, slides off the chair, out the door and back to school . . . belly full.
