Interests clash as treaty is negotiated

There is a rift among Algonquin First Nations in Quebec on how to proceed on comprehensive claims.

Gilbert Whiteduck, chief of the largest Algonquin First Nation, Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg, is disappointed that Abitibiwini, Long Point, Lac Simon, and Kichisakik, along with Wahgoshig in Ontario are joining forces to negotiate a modern treaty with the federal and Quebec governments.

Huron-Wendat Nation ancestors reburied

The largest reburial of Aboriginal ancestral remains ever undertaken in North America occurred on Sept. 14. Through a partnership between the Huron-Wendat Nation, the Ontario Heritage Trust and the University of Toronto, the remains of 1,760 Huron-Wendat ancestors were reburied at the location where the largest of the original burial sites was discovered. The significant natural heritage and archaeological preserve is situated within a conservation area owned by the Ontario Heritage Trust.

Archeological findings at CMHR digs revealed

A report recently released of the archaeological excavations conducted on the building site of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg indicates that more than 400,000 artifacts dating as far back as 1100 A.D. were recovered. The digs were conducted in two stages between 2008 and 2012 by Quaternary Consultants. The first stage was the largest block archaeological excavation ever conducted in Manitoba. The findings reveal important new evidence about the role of The Forks among early inhabitants.

MMF appeals Bipole III license

The Manitoba Métis Federation has appealed the recently issued environmental license for the proposed Bipole III Transmission Line. The formal appeal was filed with the minister of conservation and water stewardship on Sept. 11. Bipole III is a proposed 1,300 km transmission line that starts in northern Manitoba near Gillam and terminates in Winnipeg.
