Spirit of co-operation strong around Hinton

An agreement has been formalized between the Aseniwuche Winewak Nation of Canada (AWN)and Weldwood of Canada Limited's Hinton Forest Resources division, with Chevron Resources Canada and with Burlington Resources Canada Energy Ltd. that cements a longstanding association and pledges them to continue working co-operatively on a wide array of joint initiatives.

The signing took place May 9 at the Inn on 7th in Edmonton. It was standing room only in the small room that had seating for about 40.

War Party is a group of young Aboriginal rap dancers from Hobbema who tour Alberta to provide a message of healthy lifestyles to young men and women.

For five hours, War Party entertained and educated the youth at Beaver Lake First Nation's Maria Munro Hall on April 27.

The message was simple, said Beaver Lake's youth recreation worker Dwayne Lameman.

Northwest Territories Premier Stephen Kakfwi and others from his government attended the "Meet The North-Share the Vision" conference in Edmonton held April 9 to 11. The forum was an opportunity to discuss uniquely northern political and economic challenges.

Kakfwi, along with Minister of Resources, Wildlife and Economic Development Joe Handley and Resources deputy minister Robert McLeod, were there to promote the proposed Mackenzie Valley pipeline route as the best way to move Arctic gas to market.

Construction of a new Delta Hotel at Sun Peaks Resort came to a standstill April 30 as Native protestors stepped up their action against continuing development of a $70 million expansion project.

Anticipating an early start for construction workers, a group of 15 Neskonlith and Adams Lake First Nations grandmothers, mothers and children arrived at the site at 5 a.m. The protest was initiated by women, because they are the traditional gatherers of plant foods and medicines and they want the land protected for those purposes.

Now in its third year of overseas internships, the Pacific Peoples' Partnership (PPP) is looking for 10 First Nations youth age 18 to 30 to take up six-month positions in the South Pacific. The deadline for applications to the internship program is May 31. To be eligible, applicants need to meet the criteria set by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade that includes the following: applicants must be less than 30 years of age, unemployed or underemployed, and not in school.

Aboriginal artists are finding a plethora of opportunities to showcase their talents and to meet peers who share similar passions and experiences in local art festivals, like the one held recently at the Chief Atahm School on the Adams Lake Indian Band.

Held on March 24, the festival attracted Aboriginal writers, storytellers, performers, photographers, visual artists, carvers, sculptors, many of whom are multi-talented and have practiced both traditional and contemporary art forms.
