The second annual diabetes awareness golf scramble at the Paul First Nation reserve is expected to raise $4,000 for diabetes research.

Eighteen four-person teams came out to golf for a good cause despite the cold, windy weather on Sept. 7. Last year, 22 teams raised more than $5,000, said Henry Arcand, one of the organizers.

The money will go to the Three Feathers Research Foundation, which is an extension of the Arnold J. Brant Scramble for Diabetes Golf Tournament organized by members of the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.

The wheel of life has turned, and a great teacher, leader, singer, activist and all-around accomplished Aboriginal woman has been lost from our sight, but Cathy Sewell's legacy lives on.

Cathy, who succumbed to cancer on Aug. 23, is recognized for more accomplishments in her 39 years on this planet than almost anyone you can think of.

With so many achievements, her sister Anna Marie is pleased that Sweetgrass is recognizing her accomplishments in the domain of education.

What was once a strong vibrant organization has now turned into a poorly represented political body that does not know whether it wants to represent the Metis Nation at a government-to-government level or be a service delivery vehicle.

At this last MNAA assembly in the heart of "Metis country Bonnyville," the assembly was held in a side hall and only 250 people participated on Saturday and a quorum of 100 could not be reached until noon on Sunday.

I recently saw a play at the Edmonton Fringe Festival called Black and White Pictures. I left feeling like I'd been kicked in the stomach. The plot unsettled me: a normal, if a little neurotic and naive white teacher, growing bitter and jaded teaching bad Grade 1 students on a bad, bad reserve. The backdrop, given the plot, disturbed me even more: photo slides of an obviously Aboriginal community, not just of buildings and landscapes, but of real people, elders, adults and children.

A bright, sunny day and warm hospitality greeted visitors at the fourth annual Metis day celebration held Aug. 12 in the border city of Lloydminster. With a record-breaking number of participants from Alberta and Saskatchewan joining in the cultural, culinary and sporting events, the day could not have turned out any better or have been more fun, said Val Cey, program co-ordinator at the Lloydminster Native Friendship Centre.
