Tribute: Kimowan Metchewais “Kim McLain”

On July 29, 2011, Mr. Kimowan Metchewais “Kim McLain” of Cold Lake First Nations passed away at the age of 47 years.

Kim was an instrumental member of the Windspeaker/AMMSA family in the early days back in the 1980's. Kim's artistic talents were nearly limitless and his works graced the pages of Windspeaker from editorial cartoons, to illustrations, to advertising and promotional campaigns.

Kim left Windspeaker to develop his finae art skills and nuture a career as an artist. Later Kim pursued a career as an arts educator which saw him work with students to pass on his artisitic skills and vision.

Kim's contributions to Windspeaker and AMMSA cannot be measured. His contributions like his talent was limitless.

Kim is survived by his mother, Ada Metchewais; 4 brothers, Luther McLain, George McLain, Hans McLain & Dana (Shyla) Mueller; brothers & sisters, Vi Manywounds, Conrad, Molly & Marlon Metchewais; aunties & uncles; Jobby, Roseanne, Sam & Leona “Auntie Lee” Metchewais; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues & students; friend, Antje Thiessen. He was predeceased by his brother, Sheldon McLain; sister, Wanda Metchewais; grandparents, Alexander (1992) & Theresa (1991) Metchewais; aunts & uncles, Jim, Agnes, Joles “Lawrence”, Edna & Lorraine.

Wake Sunday, July 31 & Monday, August 1 at Cold Lake First Nations Band Hall, Cold Lake First Nations. Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday, August 2 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Raphael Roman Catholic Church, Cold Lake First Nations. Reverend Father Mario Jubinville the celebrant with interment in the church cemetery. If desired, donations may be made to University of North Carolina Cancer Hospital c/o Box 1780, St. Paul, Alberta T0A 3A0.
